ABOUT

I'm Alex Stenhouse and I'm a director working in film and theatre, based in East London, and from the South West of England.

I am interested in creating bold artistic work filled with sincerity and humanity, that feels spontaneous and honest, that explores form and narrative structures, and tells stories that feel intimate and small, but resonate much wider.

Within my film work I specialise in performance, storytelling, and raw authenticity across my portfolio.

I recently directed music videos for SILK, Flo Perlin, Lily Lyons, Nils Hoffmann, Steven Weston, Calmness, Benjamin Scheuer, Høney, Sleeper Service, and Lo-Ke & Shadow Kyd, and the short films Parting (for straight 8), Wildflower and Homebody. I also directed a mini documentary for SILK, shot on Super 8, and I have a particular love for vintage film.

I directed the critically lauded one-man folk musical The Lion, starring Max Alexander-Taylor. The Lion opened May 2022 at the Southwark Playhouse, and transferred across-the-pond to America for a U.S. Tour, playing Arizona Theatre Company (ATC), both Tuscon & Phoenix theatres, as well as Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park in late 2022, and then in 2024 performed in Daegu, South Korea. The show is produced by Danielle Tarento, and directed alongside Sean Daniels

I was the Assistant Director of the National Tour of Nöel Coward's Private Lives, starring Nigel Havers and Patricia Hodge - opening at Theatre Royal Bath, and touring venues such as Chichester Festival Theatre, The Lowry and Sheffield Lyceum.

I was the Associate Director of Wonderful Town at Opera Holland Park, and Creative Team Assistant on Disney’s new Beauty and the Beast National Tour. I also was the Assistant Director on Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens at the Union Theatre, Seussical at the Southwark Playhouse and My Dad's Gap Year at The Park Theatre.

I was an Associate director for Flux Theatre's FLUX GYM. I completed a ‘developing playwriting’ course with the National Theatre, I was a Script Reader for the Hampstead Theatre and I was part of Shakepeare's Globe's 'Directing Studio'.

Training: University of Exeter, National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT), Robert Icke & Lydnsey Turner, and Katie Mitchell's weekly director's groups, Young Vic Directors Programme, Mono Box (Meisner), Punchdrunk.

I am a member of SDUK (Stage Directors UK), and SDC (Stage Directors and Choreographers) in the U.S.
